How to take Care of Dentures

Dentures are an investment in your dental care and overall wellness. It is important that you take care of them. If taken care of properly, you could get up to seven years from your set of dentures. If not, you could find yourself putting forth a bigger investment sooner than expected.
Follow these Steps for Denture Cleaning
Removable partial and full dentures require care to keep them clean and looking their best. Just some things you can do to keep them in great shape include:

  1. Rinsing After Eating - After any meal, remove your dentures and run them under water to remove food debris and loose particles.
  2. Always Handle with Care - Dentures can break easily, especially if they are dropped. Also, be careful about bending or damaging the plastic or the clasps on your dentures when cleaning.
  3. Keep Your Mouth Clean - Cleaning dentures is only half the battle; you must also keep your own mouth clean. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush on any remaining natural teeth or your gums.
  4. Brush Dentures - Your dentures need to be cleaned thoroughly at least once a day. You can do so by soaking them and then brushing with a non-abrasive denture cleanser. This removes plaque, deposits and food. If you are using denture adhesive, be sure to clean out remaining adhesive each night.
  5. Soak - Overnight, soak your dentures to keep them moist and retain their shape. A mild soaking solution or water is best.
  6. Know What to Avoid - When caring for your dentures, never use boiling water or hot water as this could warp the denture shape. Also, avoid any tooth whitening products or bleach-containing products. These can weaken them and alter their colour. Abrasive cleaners, including whitening pastes, can scratch and damage your dentures; so avoid using them.
