Tips for Brushing Your Tot's Teeth

Good dental hygiene needs to start early if you want your baby's teeth to grow in strong and healthy. In fact, you should start taking care of your child's oral health before their first teeth even come in! Simply use a soft, clean, damp washcloth to wipe your baby's gums. This will prevent the growth of bacteria and keep their gums in good shape.
When to Start Brushing Teeth
You can start using an age-appropriate, soft-bristled toothbrush when your child's first few teeth begin poking through. The Canadian Dental Association recommends using a small amount of fluoridated toothpaste, no more than the size of a grain of rice. Brush your child's teeth and gums very gently using a circular motion, twice a day. You should continue brushing your child's teeth for them until they are at least three years of age, and continue to supervise them until they are six or seven.

Making Tooth Brushing Fun
It's no secret that children have a hard time standing still, so it is important to make brushing seem fun. Encourage your child to pick out their own toothbrush with a favorite cartoon character on it, and choose a toothpaste that appeals to children. Using a cute timer that plays a fun song or sound at the end is also a good way to keep them brushing.

When to Start Flossing
You can begin flossing your child's teeth as soon as they have two teeth that touch. Simply wrap the floss around your index fingers and then wrap it around the base of each tooth, moving it two or three times from bottom to top. Flossing is trickier than brushing, so you may want to wait until your child is seven or eight to let them do it on their own.
