Caring for Your Invisalign
Invisalign® is a great alternative to braces. The plastic aligners are more comfortable, can be taken out to eat or drink and take less time to create the smile you’ve always dreamed of. Best of all, you can go about your daily life without anyone noticing that you’re wearing them.
What to Expect When Wearing Invisalign on a Daily Basis
After you receive your first Invisalign tray or trays, you’ll wear them for 20 to 22 hours a day. You only take them out to eat, drink and perform basic cleaning and maintenance.
Because the aligners sit so close to your teeth, any bacteria or plaque caught underneath can cause significant damage, making cavities appear quicker than they usually do. To prevent this, it’s important to brush and floss your teeth after every meal, snack or drink that’s not plain water.
Trays are made of a clear plastic that can stain easily, which is why it’s imperative that you remove them for eating or drinking anything except cold, plain water. Furthermore, hot drinks like coffee, tea and even hot water can warp the tray, leaving them impossible to wear.
Cleaning and Maintaining Invisalign Aligners
It’s important to keep your teeth clean during your treatment. However, it’s equally important to clean and maintain your trays. If you don’t, they can develop a buildup of plaque or tartar, which grows on orthodontic devices as well as on your teeth. Your trays may become stained or even start to smell. Luckily, taking care of these aligners is easy:
• Rinse your aligner with water every time you remove it
• Every time you brush your teeth, clean your Invisalign trays using a clear antibacterial soap. Never use coloured soap, as this will stain your tray.
• Once a week, soak your aligners to sanitize and keep them clear. You can use denture cleaner, retainer cleaner, or a product made for this purpose by Invisalign.
• Don’t use regular toothpaste. Its abrasive properties may be good for cleaning teeth, but they’ll scratch the soft plastic of your aligner.
Also, every time you take out aligners, make sure to store them in their case. Wrapping them in a napkin is asking to have them lost or thrown out.
